What is a Good Cover Letter Format?

Using a standard business letter format, your cover letter should be broken down into four distinct parts: the headline, the opening paragraph, the body, and the conclusion. For maximum results, keep it short, and be sure to check your spelling and grammar. Nothing will make you look worse that misspelled words and incorrect sentences.

Step 1: Create a Strong and Quality Headline

Do you want your cover letter to be noticed?

Consider using a headline that will grab the attention of the person who is reviewing your information. Not sure what to say? Contemplate creating a distinct benefit statement about yourself. This would be anything about your professional self that would be beneficial to the goals of the company. What makes you different or unique from other candidates, and why would the potential employer want it? Here are some examples:

  • If you are looking for a bank teller that has established experience, outstanding people skills, and is fast AND efficient then I am the right candidate for Community Trust Bank.
  • Put a proven record of reliability and dependability to work for you!
  • I am an associate veterinarian that will increase your practice revenue through promoting quality medicine.

Step 2: Create an Opening Paragraph

Explain the purpose of your letter. Why are you writing and what do you want? Be specific: Generalization can kill opportunity. Mention the name of the company that you are addressing your letter to.

“I am writing to apply for the position of Associate Veterinarian at ABC Animal Hospital. I am a licensed veterinarian with over 8 years of general small animal practice. I have a firm belief and commitment in promoting preventative medicine as a means for both increasing practice revenue and keeping pets healthy. “

Step 3: Explain in Detail How You Can be a Benefit to the Company

Remember, the most important thing to any business is the business itself. Show that you have done your homework.
“My skills are a perfect match for your requirements for a Human Resource Manager. In addition to my expensive education, I excel at solving customer problems and dealing with risk management. I am a dedicated worker that will provide your company with integrity and reliability. The highlights of my resume reflect the following:”

  • Expertise in the legal issues surrounding employee compensation, overtime, and other labor laws
  • Implementing and enforcing OSHA compliance

Step 4: The Conclusion

Conclude by thanking them for taking the time to read your letter. Give them your contact information, and let them know that you look forward to hearing from them. If the situation makes it possible, it is a good idea to let them know that you will call to schedule an appointment to meet with them in person. Be certain to pay attention to any specific instructions in the job posting, because some business will request that you not telephone them.

“In summary, I would like to sincerely thank you for the opportunity to present my qualifications for your review.

Please feel free to reach me at xxx-xxx-xxxx. I will telephone in the next few days in order to schedule an appointment to meet with you in person so that we may further discuss the position. “
