Curriculum Vitae or Resume?

ResumeSpider.comIf you are confused as to whether or not you need Curriculum Vitae (CV) or a resume, then you are not alone. Many people use a CV incorrectly, and it could be an expensive mistake. Many potential employers are simply too busy to take the time to search a CV for the information relevant to the position that you are applying for. So, how do you know which one you should choose?

A resume is a short, one to two page document that highlights your qualifications that are most relevant to the job. It should outline the information that a potential employer is most likely to need in order to make a fast decision about whether or not you meet their expectations.

A CV, on the other hand, is a longer document that could range anywhere from two to ten pages and details much more information than a resume. It includes a lot of personal information, as well as detailed information regarding education, academic accomplishments, published research, awards, and more.

Here are some general guidelines that will help you decide which document you should use:

Curriculum Vitae

  • You should write a CV if you hold a Master’s degree or higher and are applying for a job in the academic, research, or medical fields. You should also use a CV for admission applications into fellowship or internship positions.
  • If you are applying for a job outside of the United States, it is customary to present them with a CV, even if they do not ask for one.
  • If a potential employer requests a CV, then you should most defiantly send them one

Resume

If you are applying for a job inside the United States, it is best to use a resume. In most situations, other than those outlined above, A CV is not an appropriate choice. A resume ensures that you are able to clearly communicate your information in a concise manner.
